I have done this work in a clinical and inclusive classroom setting.  In addition to all of this, I have learned a lot about pregnancy through the reading semesters that are a part of my internship. This has given me a strong interest in working with pregnant women and their families. I believe that pregnancy is one of the most important periods of child development and family development. I want to support mothers and help them prepare for a life changing event.  Overall, I love the work I do and want to continue to do it as a career.
      3.    How do you think your personal and educational accomplishments have led you to this career
path?
So far my career path has been based on what I love to do and not so much my personal and educational accomplishments. Because of this, I am not sure of how they have influenced my career path.

12.  Please provide any additional comments or information you think are relevant.
I just sent my resume to this agency. I did not get a response back from this agency, but this could be because they do not have any DI positions open. In early intervention, an agency can only employ a select number of specialists in each discipline that is on the team. For example, if the state mandates 5 physical therapists, the agency can only employ 5 physical therapists. There is not wiggle room which may make getting an interview in this field very difficult.

Assignment 4

The following two principles remind me most of my internship:

1.  I will strive to understand families as complex, interactive systems where parents have the primary responsibility as educators, nurturers and limit-setters for their children.
2. I will strive to understand children and youth in the context of their families.

My internship site supports families through family centered care.  Everything that is done for a client is done with his or her family. I picked these two principles because they capture what my internship site does for families. They really strive to understand their clients and use their families to help with the process. They believe that families are complex and unique. Each one comes with their own story and a goal is to understand that story so it can be used to help the client. One of my favorite evaluation questions is “Who is this child to this family?” This question is the most important because a family is interconnection and the children in the family represents something about the family.

Assignment 2

1. Provide background information about the agency that you work in this semester (e.g. location, services offered, population served, etc.)
This semester I am interning at two different agencies. The first is the Early Intervention Program at Ben Samuels Children’s Center.  The agency is located on the Montclair State University campus on Clove Road. The center is a preschool with classrooms that care for infants and toddlers. It offers early intervention services for children with special needs and/ or communication, motor, and social delays. These services are interdisciplinary and include developmental intervention (di), speech therapy (st), physical therapy (pt), music therapy (mt), and occupational therapy (ot).
The second agency is the Center for Autism and Early Childhood Mental (CAECMH). It is on the MSU campus and is located near the main entrance of the university on Normal Ave. The center was created in September of last year. It is a clinical center that works with children with autism and other mental disabilities. The center works with infants to children of the age of eight. Like Ben Samuels it also uses a interdisciplinary team that includes psychologist and LCPs in addition to what I mentioned above.

2. Discuss why you chose this site and how you think it may play a role in your future career goals.
I knew I wanted to do my internships at CAECMH. I volunteered at the center during the spring 2012 semester and I just fell in love with the work they do there. I believe in their philosophy of play and how it can benefit and help a child. The internship at Ben Samuels was a bonus. I mentioned to my supervisor at CAECMH that I was not sure about if I wanted to go into teaching. My internship there is to help clarify my goals and figure out what type of Early Intervention work do I want to do.

3. Discuss the physical aspects of the agency site and the neighborhood surrounding the site.
Both agencies are on the MSU campus and are in Montclair. Ben Samuels is near the train tracks, but is enclosed with fences for safety reasons.  It is a beautiful building with lots of room of outside for the children to play. CAECMH looks like a house and I believe that is why it is seems inviting. You would not know it was a clinical office if you looked at it from the outside.

4. Although you are just starting your internship describe your initial impression of the strengths and weaknesses of the agency i.e. in what areas is the agency strong and in what areas was the agency lacking?
For Ben Samuels, its strength is its interdisciplinary approach to educating. Most often children get their services in the classroom so they do not miss much. These services are ST and DI most often. This approach is great because it is inclusive.  The only weakness I can see might not be a considered a weakness, but instead a question. I wonder how the teachers feel about the interdisciplinary team coming into their classrooms.  A classroom might be visited by multiple team members in a day, I wonder if the visits changes things.
For CAECMH I cannot say any strengths or weaknesses yet because I have not gotten the chance to observe a clinical appointment. The center has seen children, but I have been there to see what happens.

5. Identify the funding source(s) for this agency
Ben Samuels is funded through government and private funding. Some students attend through their families playing for them to attend, others receive assistance. CAECMH receives grants and payments from insurance companies for the services they give. I am not sure if they have other sources of income.

6. Tell us if you think there is an opportunity for full-time work once you graduate
At both agencies, I am not sure if there is any chance of full time work. Ben Samuels does not need another DI person on their staff and the CAECMH may not be able to afford to heir me. Also, I believe they would want someone that is more qualified than me.

Assignment 1

1) Please tell us about yourself. For example what is the funniest thing that ever happened to you or what about your makes you interesting?
I am not sure how to answer this question so I have compiled a list of characteristics from various friends. According to them I am:
1.     Caring
2.     Sociable
3.     Loud
4.     Short (I am supposedly 4’11 which is three inches away from being considered a dwarf)
5.     Old (My close friends and family refer to me as grandma because of my elderly lady nature at times.)

2) Please tell us your concentration. Why did you choose this concentration?
My concentration is Family Services. Originally, I was working towards a Child Life Specialist concentration, but because the department is currently in the process of shutting down the program. I decided to switch to Family Services. Also, the concentration allowed me to graduate early and have an internship that I got to help create.

3) What is the name of your internship site and what is your position?
I am currently interning at two different locations under the same supervisor. The first is the Jeffery Dworkin Early Intervention Program at Ben Samuels Children Center. At this site I am an Early Invention (EI) intern. The second location is the Center for Autism and Early Childhood Mental Health. I am known as a undergraduate intern here.

4) What are your current career or graduate school plans? Or tell us if you plan to marry rich or travel the world!
I do plan to attend graduate school, but I am still unsure on what I want to study. However, marrying rich will always be an option.

5) Also, tell us about your family - for example - are your parents married or not, do you live with them, do you have siblings, pets etc? What is an activity you like to share with your family? etc.
My parents are married. They have been together for 35 years. I am the oldest of two. My younger sister is the biggest pain in the world, but I assume I love her. I still live at home, but this not by choice. My father suffered five mini strokes last year which left them partially paralyzed. I help take care of him and my sister, because my mother works a lot.

6) Please also write about 1 or 2 topics on the syllabus that interest you and WHY.
I am very excited about the class on Career Services at MSU & Resume 101. Also, I am looking forward to Linda Flynn guest speaking. One of the tasks I hate the most is updating my resume. I believe I am not doing it correctly. This class will help me with that. Additionally, I spent a month trying to get in contact with Ms. Flynn. This class gives me the opportunity to finally speak to her.

7) Last tell me what you think about wikis - or what you learned from the video.
The wikis are interesting. I do not have much of an opinion on them yet because I am still getting use to using it, but so far it is not horrible.
